Star offers a quieter pace, newer homes and larger lots, with reasonable access to Boise’s amenities. The city also reaches across a county line: about 82% of its land is in Ada County and 18% in Canyon County. The Census puts the median year built for Star’s homes at 2011.
Plenty. Star is one of the valley’s fastest-growing towns, with many new neighborhoods and larger-lot options. Building permits in Star covered 881 new homes in 2025, every one a single-unit building (Census Building Permits Survey, https://www2.census.gov/econ/bps/Place/West%20Region/we2025a.txt), and another 672 from January through August 2026 (Census Building Permits Survey, https://www2.census.gov/econ/bps/Place/West%20Region/we2608y.txt). A permit means approval to build, not a finished house.
About 33 minutes to downtown Boise, though the exact time depends on your neighborhood. State Highway 44 runs east–west through Star. The Idaho Transportation Department says initial work to widen it to five lanes between SH-16 and Star Road begins in October 2026, with completion expected by late 2027. Star workers average 27.5 minutes each way to work (Census ACS 2020–2024).
Star is split between two. In the Census Bureau’s 2025 boundary files, about 83% of the city’s land falls in Joint School District No. 2, which uses the name West Ada School District, and about 17%, on the west side, in Middleton School District 134. Lines can change, so ask the district to confirm any single address.
It varies street by street. On the Idaho Department of Water Resources map of irrigation service areas, the area shared by Middleton Mill Ditch Co. and the Middleton Irrigation Association covers about 41% of Star, Farmers Union Ditch Co. about 19% and Pioneer Ditch Co. about 15%, with Canyon County Water Co. and others on smaller pieces. The latest irrigation bill for a parcel names who serves it.
About 16.5% of Star’s land area is in FEMA’s Special Flood Hazard Area, where the chance of flooding is 1% or more in any year, and about 3.4% is regulatory floodway. Most of it is zone AE, where FEMA has published base flood elevations. Look up the parcel on FEMA’s Flood Map Service Center before writing an offer.
Star Riverwalk Park, a 4.76-acre city park at 1000 S. Main Street, has a walking path along the Boise River and several spots to reach the bank for fishing. Freedom Park, just north of the river beside the Star Riverhouse, has two stocked ponds and a floating dock for kayaks and paddleboards.
